The Sun reported that a customer was charged an extra £2.19 to his bill when he returned a car to Avis at Marseilles airport.
When he queried it, he was told the fee was a ‘Brexit Tax’ due to sterling falling below a certain level after the EU referendum.
An Avis spokesperson told TTG: “The additional charge is in no way related to Brexit. We apologise for the mistake made by our rental agent at Marseille and are investigating this miscommunication as a matter of high priority.”
The company blamed the charge on “a system error” affecting “a small number of pre-paid reservations” that it was in the process of correcting.
