Firefighters were reportedly called to the exclusive resort area of Quinta do Lago after fires broke out in some private villas and part of a golf course near Faro, with some holidaymakers evacuated as a precaution.
According to Reuters, nearly 900 firefighters have been combating three active blazes in Leiria alone, while 2,841 firefighters are tackling fires across mainland Portugal.
Temperatures have reached 47 degrees celsius in some parts of the country with the highest readings expected in the Santarem and Castelo Branco districts.
Around 135 people are said to have suffered minor injuries since the fires started last week and about 800 people have been evacuated, according to the country’s Civil Protection Authority.
The UK Foreign Office said: "Forest fires can occur anywhere in Portugal during the summer months. In recent years, fires have become more frequent due to drought and high temperatures.
"Forest fires are highly dangerous and unpredictable. The Portuguese authorities may evacuate areas and close roads for safety reasons."
