Birmingham and East Midlands airports both had to temporarily close their runways early on Friday to allow staff to clear snow. There was also some disruption to flights at Liverpool John Lennon and Leeds Bradford due to snow.
Birmingham airport was closed for one hour as snow teams cleared the runway and taxiways causing a handful of cancellations and some delays before 9am.
“Expect delays to departing flights as our ground crews de-ice the backed-up aircraft,” said the airport in an update.
The runway at East Midlands has also now reopened after being closed for around three hours.
“Our runway has reopened and our teams are working hard to keep disruption to a minimum,” added the airport on Twitter.
Passengers travelling from Liverpool John Lennon airport also faced disruption early on Friday, although its runway remained operational.
“Heavy snowfalls this morning have impacted on flights in and out of the airport. Our teams are continuing to clear the snow so we can be fully operational again soon but please check the status of flights with your airline if travelling today,” added the airport on Twitter.
There were also some delays and cancellation to flights from Leeds Bradford airport due to the inclement weather. Manchester airport said it was operating as normal on Friday.
Rail services in parts of England have also been disrupted by the severe weather with Merseyrail, TransPennine Express, Northern and East Midlands Railway all affected.
