Holiday spend is expected to top £40 billion next year as people make up for holiday time lost to the pandemic.
A new survey by American Express found more than half of Brits are already planning an overseas holiday next year.
One in five have already started booking for 2022, the company’s poll of 2,001 UK adults found.
Respondents, on average, said they expected their holiday to set them back £1,567, with more than a fifth (21%) indicating they plan to spend in excess of £2,000 on a getaway.
More than a quarter (27%) said they anticipated spending more on their holiday this year and they did last year.
Nearly half (48%) said they were willing to spend more because they’ve missed travelling abroad, while 29% said it was to treat themselves.
Moreover, while international travel is back on the agenda, 44% of respondents said they planned to holiday at home and overseas next year.
American Express forecasts 2022 holiday spend running to £41.2 billion in total.
June and July look set to be the busiest months, with 19% and 18% of respondents respectively saying that was when they were planning to get away.
Spain (21%) came out as the most in-demand destination, followed by Greece (14%), France and Italy (13%), the US (9%) and Portugal (7%), with short-haul largely dominating intent.
The main reason for booking in advance was missing international travel (32%) followed by locking in celebrations postponed owing to Covid (21%).
Just shy of a quarter of respondents (24%) revealed they had not left the UK during the pandemic.
