Mia Ayliffe-Chung had been staying at Shelley’s Backpackers in Home Hill near Townsville, in Queensland.
The suspected murderer has been named as 29-year-old Frenchman Smail Ayed.
He has been charged with two counts of attempted murder, 12 counts of serious assault and one count of serious animal cruelty, after a dog at the backpackers was also killed, according to BBC News.
A post mortem found that 21-one year old Ayliffe-Chung from Winksworth, Derbyshire died from multiple stab wounds.
A 30-year-old British man named as Tom Jackson is understood to have tried to save Ayliffe-Chung after she was stabbed.
He remains in hospital with critical head injuries.
