A senior Ryanair executive has left the company in the fallout over the cancellation of thousands of flights.

Chief operating officer Michael Hickey, who has been with the carrier for 30 years, was responsible for scheduling pilots’ rosters. He is thought to have resigned in the fall-out from the fiasco stemming from a shortage of pilots.

However, Ryanair chief executive Michael O’Leary told the Daily Telegraph that Hickey would continue “in an advisory role” until the end of the month, saying that he would be “a hard act to replace”.
