More than 20 people are believed to have been killed after a train struck a barrier at speed and burst into flames at Cairo’s main railway station on Wednesday morning (February 27).
Egypt’s National Railway Authority said the fire broke out when a train collided with a concrete buffer at Ramses Station in the centre of the capital, the BBC reports.
Images from the scene show the burnt-out wreckage of the locomotive with dozens of emergency services personnel attending the scene.
The BBC further reports at least 40 others were injured in the fire. The Associated Press, citing the head of Cairo Railroad hospital Mohammed Said, reports the death toll is expected to rise.
An investigation is under way.
The station is one of the Egyptian capital’s main transport hubs, providing connections to various Metro lines, as well as tram and bus services.
