The Scottish Passenger Agents’ Association (SPAA) has called on the country’s devolved administration to follow the UK government’s reported plans to overhaul its international travel regulations.
According to national reports, the government is set to halve the red list and remove the amber classification altogether on Friday (17 September).
Ministers are also reportedly poised to announce a major overhaul of the UK’s Covid-19 travel testing regime.
SPAA president Joanne Dooey said the UK will be able to "release the handbrake" on travel if the reported changes take shape.
"The traffic light system ought to have been simple, but the endlessly changing meanings of the traffic lights and the additions of sub categories meant that no one could keep up with the constant modifications and variations," she added.
"Traveller confidence has been at rock bottom. Simplifying this into red and green will be a far better system for UK travellers."
Dooey called on the Scottish government to follow suit and make a "speedy announcement" that it will also streamline its traffic light system, including the replacement of costly PCR tests with lateral flow/antigen tests.
"We need [the Scottish government] to make this announcement now so that hard-working Scots have time to book holidays for the October schools break," Dooey added.
"We don’t want Scotland to be perceived as being asleep at the wheel when the traffic lights change. And we don’t want Scots travelling across the border to England to fly in order to avoid any stricter controls in Scotland."
