The Travel Foundation has launched a new training quiz, designed to raise awareness of the challenges presented by responsible tourism.
Its Paradise (Almost) Lost course takes entrants to a virtual tropical island, tasking them with tackling a range of sustainable travel issues.
These range from saving the island’s crumbling temples amid an influx of new tourists, promoting its local produce on menus, and how to handle waste.
The 20-minute quiz is aimed at everyone working in the travel sector, from agents to destination authority representatives.
Travel Counsellors, Kuoni and the Pacific Asia Travel Association (PATA) have all thrown their weight behind the initiative, as well as Morocco hotel owner Vanessa Branson.
A Kuoni spokesperson said: “The quiz is a really useful insight into the topics surrounding responsible tourism and we all found it a fun and engaging way to involve people around the business.
“This is definitely something we’d like to adapt with the Travel Foundation for our wider team and keep the topic of responsible tourism front of mind.”
Mario Hardy, PATA chief executive, said: “This is a superb idea and extremely informative and easy to follow. This can really help small destinations and offer solutions to improve the sustainability of the tourism industry.”
Branson, owner of the El Fenn hotel in Marrakesh, added: “Taking part should be obligatory for all those entering the tourism industry. It is full of useful, simple ideas for encouraging good practice without sounding preachy.”
Besides the quiz, the Travel Foundation has been working on more in-depth, bespoke courses, training options and sustainability advice for partners.
These include hosting a product and supply chain workshop with Travel Counsellors to identify where best to focus their efforts, which has led to the company making new sustainability commitments.
Its homeworkers have been encouraged to take the quiz, and will also be supported with tailored training created specifically for Travel Counsellors in the coming months.
Mike Vincent, Travel Counsellors’ head of learning and development, said: “We have a fantastic opportunity to learn more about what we can do to support destination sustainability and how we all play an active part in this, and it’s something we are absolutely focused on for our people at Travel Counsellors.
“As such, I think our Travel Counsellors will be excited and energised by the training.”
Members can access the quiz at the Travel Foundation's dedicated training website.
