The couple, who were from Germany, are reported to have been in their 70s, and had arrived in Australia earlier that month, renting a car in Alice Springs on Thursday, the BBC said.
A search was initiated when the vehicle was found empty 70km away.
The 76-year-old man’s body was discovered on Monday, and a day later, his wife’s body was found too.
Local police said the couple’s family had been identified from holiday snaps taken from their camera, which was found close by to the bodies.
Australian authorities have now contacted the German consulate.
