Video transcript
Jess: Welcome to our In The Spotlight video with Belize. Althea, let's start by talking about what Belize is doing as an ecotourism destination.
Althea: So Belize stands out as an ecotourism destination. We are committed to sustainability and community-based tourism. Our efforts range from protecting the barrier reef and rainforest to supporting locally owned lodges and indigenous communities, including the Garifuna and Maya communities. In recognition of these initiatives, Belize was honoured as the leading sustainable destination at the 2024 World Sustainable Travel and Hospitality Awards.
Jess: Fantastic. Thank you. And Belize is also a leading wildlife and nature destination. Could you talk us through some of the highlights that agents can discuss with their clients?
Althea: Absolutely. Belize is renowned for its lush rainforest. We have a vast cave system and the Belize Barrier Reef, which is a Unesco world heritage site. Visitors can spot toucans among the many species of birds found here in the country. They could spot manatees and perhaps even get a glimpse of a jaguar while here. The country offers a rich diversity of marine and terrestrial wildlife, all experienced through eco-friendly tours and conservation focused activities.
Jess: And what are some of the cultural and historical selling points that agents should be aware of?
Althea: Belize has a rich cultural and historical heritage. We have over 10 different ethnic groups from the ancient Maya civilisation to the vibrant Garifuna and Creole communities. Visitors can explore archaeological sites, experience the traditional Maya and Garifuna villages, and join in some of the lively festivals we have throughout the year that showcase our diverse traditions.
Jess: There's also lots to attract adventure seekers, isn't there?
Althea: Yes, there is. Belize is an adventure hotspot. We offer cave tubing, you can do zip lining, jungle trekking, kayaking, snorkelling, diving along the Belize Barrier Reef, you name it. Visitors can explore waterfalls, wildlife rich forests, and stunning landscapes that the country offers.
Jess: Brilliant. And finally, talk us through how visitors can get to Belize, as I believe there's a new flight on the horizon, isn't there?
Althea: Yes, there is, which is very exciting for us. Starting 8 December 2025, we will have a new non-stop flight from Montreal directly to Belize, from the Montreal Trudeau International Airport where we'll offer same day connection for travellers travelling from more than 20 European cities, including Paris, Frankfurt, London, Amsterdam and beyond, to Belize.
Jess: Well, thank you for sharing all that great information with me, Althea. And thank you for watching our In The Spotlight video with Belize.
