The new warnings cover a vast swathe of the Middle East extending from the eastern Mediterranean and the Gulf region to central Asia. The FCDO has also renewed its advisory against all but essential travel to Israel, and continues to advise against all travel to parts of Israel and Palestine.
Besides several prominent winter sun destinations, the blanket warning – prompted by protests in Iran and attempts by ruling authorities there to quash the dissent, which human rights groups say has resulted in more than 2,000 deaths – also covers Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Oman, Bahrain, Kuwait, Iraq, Lebanon, Libya and Syria.
Besides the most complex advisories for Israel, Palestine and Iran, the warning reads: "There is a heightened risk of regional tension. Escalation could lead to travel disruption and other unanticipated impacts. British nationals should take sensible precautions, considering their own individual circumstances."
Travellers are advised to monitor FCDO advice and guidance on preparing for a crisis, sign up to FCDO travel alerts, monitor local and international media, register for local authority alerts and follow any guidance from authorities, and avoid security or military facilities.
The Foreign Office has temporarily closed the British embassy in Iran's capital Tehran, and continues to advise against all travel to the country. The BBC reports that both the UK and US have reduced numbers of military personnel at an air base in Qatar, with US President Donald Trump still considering whether to take action in Iran.
The FCDO notes disruption to international flights in and out of Iran after a temporary airspace closure on Wednesday (14 January), and warns of ongoing disruption to communications – including "severe limitations on internet access".
