Hays said the high number of applications – 2,137 applicants for the 144 apprentice places it awarded – underlined how much it was widely recognised that apprenticeships were an integral part of the Hays Travel culture. This year it will appoint at least 150, he added.
Hays Travel is now bringing the same culture to the stores previously owned by Bath Travel, the Bournemouth-based travel agency chain it took over in 2014.
Hays said: “Our apprentices are not just cannon fodder – categorically not. We train and develop them, and many of our senior people today such as our head of commercial Jonathan Woodall stated as apprentices”.
He added that the company recruited on personalities and always looked to appoint to senior positions from within, reflecting the low staff turnover across the group.
