The crash happened close to Sea World’s Gold Coast park in Queensland. According to reports in Australia’s national press, a helicopter with seven people onboard struck another carrying a further six that was coming in to land.
The couple have been named locally as Diane, 57, and Ron Hughes, 65. The third victim was a 36-year-old Australian and the fourth, 40-year-old SeaWorld Helicopters pilot Ashley Jenkinson, the BBC reports.
All four were in the helicopter taking off. The other three passengers, who included two children, were seriously injured. Five of the six people in the second helicopter, which landed upright, suffered minor injuries.
An investigation by Australia’s transport safety bureau is under way.
In a statement, Village Roadshow Theme Parks (VRTP), which operates Sea World’s Gold Coast park, said it wished to offer all those impacted by the crash "its deepest condolences".
"While Sea World Helicopters is an independent professional operator, VRTP is working with emergency services and the authorities to provide every possible assistance," said the business.
"Sea World Helicopters is closed until further notice and we will provide updates in due course."
Sea World Helicopters added: "Sea World Helicopters is devastated by the tragic accident which happened on the Gold Coast on the 2 January.
"Our deepest sympathy and condolences go out to all those involved at this very sad time. We are closed until further notice and will refund all tickets purchased. Please bear with us during this very difficult time as we process your refund."
