The incident occurred near to the Beyazit Square area, which is popular with tourists.
The BBC reported that a further 36 people were injured in the attack. No organisation has yet claimed responsibility.
The bomb reportedly targeted a police bus.
Current advice from the UK Foreign Office highlights the rise in terrorist attacks in the country, saying: “it’s increasingly likely that some attacks will also target western interests and tourists from western countries, particularly in the major cities”.
