Online travel agency eDreams Odigeo has analysed its booking data and predicted the top travel destinations for 2020.
eDreams has named Tokyo as the top destination for European travellers next year in its fourth annual European Traveller Insights Report.
The destination bagged the top spot due to a year-on-year bookings hike of 90% and a year-on-year bookings increase 0f 101% during The Rugby World Cup in October and November.
With Japan hosting the Olympic Games next year, eDreams expects UK visitors to Tokyo to increase three-fold.
The comes as the Japan National Tourism Organization (JNTO) is trying to attract 40 million annual inbound tourists by 2020, and 60 million by 2030.
“Tourists from the UK are currently recording the highest increase in bookings to visit Tokyo next year,” said Pablo Caspers, chief travel officer of eDreams.
“This is despite the Japanese yen being among a number of far eastern currencies against which sterling has fallen in value significantly.
“Furthermore, it is promising to see that consumers from the UK will continue their appetite for long-haul destinations next year, despite Brexit uncertainty.”
Tokyo was followed on eDream’s top 10 list by Fort-de-France (Martinique), Pointe-a-Pitre (Guadeloupe), Phuket, Dakar, Miami, Lanzarote, Bangkok and Amsterdam.
eDreams receives 1.7 billion searches across its websites each month.
