The Department for Transport said the red list “will continue to remain on standby as our first line of defence” against future Covid variants arriving from abroad.
The DfT said it “is looking to replace the hotel quarantine policy with other contingency measures including home isolation”.
However, a stumbling block remains finding a way of tracking those in isolation to ensure they comply with rules.
The DfT said more details would be confirmed “later in the spring” and “provided a sufficiently robust digital solution to ensure compliance with home isolation can be found”.
