Virgin Atlantic is searching for Manchester’s hottest musical talent to headline a special, one-off gig in Los Angeles to mark the launch of its new Manchester-LA service next month.
Andy Bell, former bassist of city legends Oasis, will spearhead the search for a new star band or musician in the Manchester airport catchment area, who Virgin will fly out to LA to perform at the city’s iconic Roxy music venue.
Entries opened on Tuesday (30 April), with the winner set to jet off in Upper Class to the city of angels on Virgin’s inaugural flight.
Virgin will fly three times weekly from Manchester to LA, starting 26 May.
The airline says the new route links two cities, each with their own rich musical heritage.
Located on Sunset Strip, The Roxy has hosted the likes of Bruce Springsteen, Neil Young, Bob Marley and The Ramones, over the years.
Entrants will be shortlisted by an expert panel featuring Bell and Virgin Records managing director Clive Cawley ahead of a public vote.
Finalists will then perform live in front of the panel at Manchester airport and demonstrate they have what it takes to play The Roxy.
Bell will join the winner in LA to offer his expert advice and support. “Virgin Atlantic’s Headline the Roxy is the ultimate chance for someone to make their big break and have the experience of a lifetime in LA,” he said.
“There’s so much musical talent coming from the north – I’m looking forward to seeing the entries and heading across the Atlantic with the winner.”
Juha Jarvinen, Virgin Atlantic executive vice-president, said: “Manchester and LA have long shared a great love for music, with each city claiming home to legendary bands and icons.
“We’re delighted to be able to give the North’s next big thing the opportunity to perform at The Roxy and let their music career take flight.”
