Upchurch, a well-known figure in the travel industry has collaborated closely with Crystal in the past, with luxury travel network Virtuoso having had a "strong partnership" with Crystal Cruises since it first launched.
Crystal AirCruises is the company’s newest proposition, and will see the new aircraft – described as “the largest privately owned tour jet” – offer round-the-world charters for up to 88 guests.
Upchurch, who is chief executive of Virtuoso, said: “As Crystal diversifies its offerings, we look forward to supporting their efforts, just as they continue to support the travel advisor community and Virtuoso.”
The aircraft was christened on July 12 in Las Vegas, with the event live-streamed on Facebook, allowing “travellers from around the world to witness Crystal Skye’s debut”.
Following the breaking of champagne against the aircraft’s hull, Edie Rodriguez, chief executive and president of Crystal, welcomed guests onboard Crystal Skye to see the design touches and space first hand.
Rodriguez said: “We’re delighted to collaborate with Matthew for this milestone occasion and to continue collaborating with all of our travel agent partners when Crystal Skye takes to the skies.
“It is fitting that such a revered leader in luxury travel would christen a vessel that will set an entirely new standard in the industry; and even more so that her godfather is a member of the travel professional community."
