Shaking up branches

He further revealed Midcounties may shake up its branches’ traditional way of operating as part of a more “omnichannel” approach.

“We shouldn’t be restricted by the traditional nine-to-five opening hours,” he said. “We want to really open that up so there are opportunities to interact with the branch one day, but then a homeworker the next, for example.

As part of this omni-channel push, Midcounties will invest in its technology.

“There are some exciting developments coming along as far as online booking is concerned. We want to make it a slicker process and easier for members, and to make sure it dovetails nicely with the branch network,” he said.

Elsewhere, Ponsonby revealed Midcounties is in the process of appointing a new executive member of the team following the departure of Alistair Rowland to Blue Bay Travel.

“Where we are now with travel and the ambition we have for it, we’re looking to recruit someone with real experience in the area, particularly commercial digital experience, so we’ll ask them to focus purely on our travel and leisure operations going forward.

“We are piloting a new member reward proposition, which we see as being a very important component for building our travel proposition.”

Government criticism

With his cross-sector oversight, does Ponsonby agree with the view travel is under-supported in government?

“I certainly think it’s misunderstood,” he said. “In a number of the other industries we cover, you’ve got a more specific representation and that makes life easier.

“It’s the consultation process around decision-making that’s been missing. It doesn’t feel like it’s joined up.”
