Firefighters in South Africa’s Western Cape say strong winds are making it difficult to control wild fires that have been raging in the region for two days.

More than 10,000 locals have been evacuated from their homes in Knysna - a popular tourist spot on the Garden Route. Authorities have been forced to call on army troop to help battle the blaze on the ground after thick smoke and the poor weather grounded fire service helicopters.

Three people – a farmer, his wife and young son – are believed to have died.

A number of separate fires are burning in the area, famous for its spectacular coast and forests. Knysna’s annual oyster festival, which takes place every July, is a major draw for tourists.
