Jess: So why is now a pivotal time for Sarawak to be showcased at WTM?
Minister: Thank you very much indeed. This year, is a wonderful year for us. For us to prepare for Visit Malaysia year, next year, 2026. Sarawak Tourism Board is proud to play a very leading role to promote Sarawak in the campaign, together with Malaysia, the state of Sarawak adventure, culture and sustainable tourism.
Jess: Can you tell me a little more about your activity at WTM this year?
Minister: At WTM London 2025, we are very happy in terms of our pavilion. This is our own Sarawak pavilion. It’s the biggest, largest for us. And then we have 50 partners, coming together with us, to showcase what we can and what we have to offer of Sarawak. And indeed our culture, our cities, and heritage. This is all part of what Sarawak has to offer, we are definitely very proud.
Jess: Speaking of what it has to offer, it’s known as the Gateway to Borneo, so what can travellers expect?
Minister: Let me explain a little bit about where Sarawak is, Sarawak is in Borneo. Borneo is the third largest island in the world. In this part we have so much offer. We have 34 ethnic groups, different food, different cultures and on top of that we have a lot festivals. We are very proud that we have a lot of rainforests, we have 14 national parks, we are very much into ecotourism, and we would definitely would like those who come and visit Sarawak. They will have a wonderful time with us.
Jess: I hear you have a special anniversary this year being celebrated?
Minister: Indeed, this year will be the 25th year that we will be celebrating the activation of the Mulu Cave. It’s one of the UNESCO-recognised heritage sites. Now that place was recognised in the year 2000, so its 25th year. One of the magnificent sites would be, during sunset, in one cave there will be millions of bats. In one cave we have a chamber we called Sarawak Chambers. Sarawak Chambers, in terms of size of the entrance, would be 17 football fields, or if boeing, wing-to-wing, 40 boeings – that is the size of Sarawak Chambers.
Jess: Can you tell me how and where travel agents can learn the latest product news and information from Sarawak?
Minister: Well we have our Sarawak Tourism Board, we have a website there. It’s very up to date. It’s a showcase of what Sarawak has. We have a calendar of events, that one is under our own Ministry website – the Ministry of Tourism. That website you will be able to see what our next plan is for the following year. Now we are more or less finalising what events will take place for 2026.
Jess: Brilliant. Thank you minister for your time today.
Minister: You are most welcome.
