With the global luxury yacht market predicted to grow from $10 billion to $17 billion in the next seven years, it’s no surprise that advisors are keen to sharpen their knowledge of this exclusive type of travel.
Yacht holidays offer clients a number of perks such as elevated privacy, highly-attentive service and itinerary flexibility. They can also bring major commission for travel agents, with the cost of a yacht charter for one week ranging anywhere from £10,000 to £500,000.
David Ox, managing director of Winged Boots, says he’s seen an increased demand for yacht holidays after nearly 20 years’ experience in the industry – and he doesn’t see this trend declining.
Speaking to TTG Luxury, the luxury travel expert answers our burning questions on how to seamlessly book this type of holiday.
What is the first thing you should do when a client enquires about chartering a yacht?
Always start by finding a reputable charter broker who can guide you through the process. They should also be approved by MYBA, the worldwide yachting association which holds the industry to high ethical and technical standards. They will make recommendations on everything from the type of yacht, the crew, the destination and the itinerary.
What are some common pitfalls to avoid when organising a yacht charter?
You need to ensure that the boat size and crew will be able to fulfil your required itinerary, as smaller boats with less crew are unable to stay anchored for consecutive nights in comparison to larger boats.
An experienced charter broker, like the ones approved by MYBA, will be able to guide you on this and manage your expectations.
It’s also important to explain the payment process to the client. Most charters have a base cost with additional charges called APA, or Advanced Provisioning Allowance, which covers expenses like food, fuel and tips. As a rule of thumb, it’s 30%, so you need to factor it in, because a £100,000-a-week yacht could actually be £130,000 in reality.
If the client wanted to have an upfront cost on a yacht charter, the charter would dictate where you’re travelling, the food and drink, so you can settle those charges before you depart.
As this can take away from the flexibility of a yacht holiday, however, 95% of my clients choose the base cost with APA.
What are some of the most unique onboard experiences clients have requested?
Specific water toys, extraordinary dining experiences – there really is not a request that’s too big or too small. With the right crew, the possibilities are endless. But it’s all about memories that last a lifetime. I actually think yachting is also an ideal holiday for a young family, because it gives you so much precious time with your family that you wouldn’t get elsewhere.
Which destinations are currently most in demand for private yacht charters?
The south of France has always been a very popular destination, with the many events that suit private yacht charter, Cannes film festival, MIPIN, Monaco GP to name a few.
Croatia and Italy have also become more and more popular over the last few years. But Majorca and the South of France continue to be the staple location for many.
How far in advance should clients book?
The earlier the better, to ensure you book the best vessel, as a well-established charter boat will be booked up to a year in advance. That said, we do receive last-minute enquiries and will still put as much effort and planning into these as we do for the charters that book in advance.
