The promotion, which launches on July 1, is aimed at encouraging holidaymakers and the travel industry to “take care of the local environment and support local communities in holiday destinations”.
Tui Group will be encouraging its teams in destinations to run beach cleans, while Thomas Cook said it would urge customers to make greener holiday pledges and also encourage its hotels to participate.
Barrhead Travel will hold “no plastic days” across its branches on July 19, and run beach cleans in Scotland and Cumbria. The agency will also encourage customers to make pledges and post them on social media.
Meanwhile, Midcounties Co-operative will feature Make Holidays Greener promotional material in its stores, and will double membership points on sales of Travelife (the sustainability certification scheme) hotels.
Abta is also urging other travel businesses across the industry to join in with the annual campaign, which will run until August 31.
Companies can participate by encouraging customers to make a pledge and also by promising to organise a clean-up in resorts for their staff and customers.
Holidaymakers can choose from 15 sustainable holiday pledges, covering all aspects of a holiday from eating local food to saying no to plastic.
Last year’s Make Holidays Greener campaign saw 700 sustainable holiday pledges made, with recycling water bottles, reusing hotel towels and using local public transport named the most popular. In addition, almost 2,000 people helped to collect 6,000kg of rubbish as part of 125 beach cleans in 23 countries.
Nikki White, Abta director of destinations and sustainability, said: “We are delighted to be leading this fantastic initiative and working with the industry to support more sustainable holidays.”
