At around 4.30pm, the airport tweeted: "Following today’s high temperatures, a surface defect was detected on the runway. Engineers were called immediately to site and repair works are currently in progress to resume operations as soon as possible."
The airport apologised for the inconvenience caused.
An update at 5.30pm read: Flights are temporarily suspended to allow for an essential runway repair after high surface temperatures caused a small section to lift. Engineers are currently on site and we hope to resume operations shortly."
The airport confirmed in a further update at 6pm the runway reopened to departing flights at 5.40pm, although arrivals remained suspended.
