An Italian ferry line has converted one of its ships into a floating hospital for coronavirus patients.
Grandi Navi Veloci, which is part of the MSC Group, has kitted out Splendid as a care centre as part of a project with certification company Rina and in coordination with Italy’s Liguria health system.
The ship is stationed in Genoa and currently has 25 beds in single cabins, although it has the capacity to provide 400 beds.
It also has a heliport and dedicated area for healthcare workers.
Rina verified the new floating hospital complied with current regulations, for free.
Other companies which have offered free services or products for the project include HP-Aruba, Alpha Trading, Artigo Rubber Flooring, San Giorgio del Porto, Auscomar, ItalBrokers, Le Navi Maritime Agency, Burger King, Covim, Emis, Giunti Editore, IdealService, Infomaster, Mantero Sistemi, Provveditoria Marittima Ligure Angelo Novelli and Ansaldo Naval Technical Studio.
