Treehouse Hotels plans second UK hotel

Treehouse Hotel Manchester is part of a £200-million redevelopment of the former Renaissance Hotel on Deansgate and is slated to open in 2023.

SH Hotels & Resorts, part of Starwood Capital Group, is developing the hotel in partnership with Property Alliance Group and it will join the brand’s debut hotel, which opened in London (pictured above) in 2019.

The 216-room hotel is being designed in collaboration with UK-based 93ft and will incorporate energy and carbon savings along with extensive use of reclaimed and recycled materials in the construction of the building and furniture.

Biophilic design concepts will feature throughout, such as the introduction of roof gardens, living green walls and a kitchen garden harvesting rainwater, while honey will be produced by the hotel’s rooftop apiary. The building facade will also feature local artists’ murals as an homage to the city and community.

Manchester is as much a destination for travellers as a gathering place for its energetic local community,” said Barry Sternlicht, Starwood Capital Group chairman and chief executive. “As a sustainable brand, we will reuse and repurpose the existing building; we are thrilled to set roots in the city of Manchester.”

Guests will enter the hotel beneath a treehouse canopy while other design quirks will include hopscotch carpets; stepping-stones in lift lobbies; custom-designed space hoppers in the hotel gym; and an invitation for visitors to carve their stories into a central living wooden art piece that will grow over time.

Treehouse is the third brand from SH Hotels & Resorts, which also operates 1 Hotels, with properties in South Beach, Manhattan, Brooklyn, West Hollywood and Haitang Bay and projects under development in San Francisco, Nashville, Sunnyvale, Hanalei Bay, Cabo San Lucas, Paris, Toronto and Melbourne.

The company also operates Baccarat Hotels Resorts, which has a hotel in New York and projects under development in Doha and Bordeaux.
