Norwegian is closing six bases and cutting frequencies on a number of routes in order to boost its performance.

Six bases will close while six routes will see reduced frequencies

The bases due for closure are in Palma, Gran Canaria and Tenerife while Stewart and Providence in the US are also up for the chop.

It will also shut its 737 base in Fiumicino airport in Rome, although its Dreamliner base will continue to operate there.

A spokesman for the airport said the base closures will not mean flights will be stopped to the destinations, but will mean local flight and cabin crew won’t be based there.

Meanwhile, the airline is cutting frequencies on six European short-haul routes, including Palma-Copenhagen; Rome-Helsinki and Tenerife North-Madrid.

Helga Bollmann Leknes, Norwegian Air chief commercial officer, said: “The company has reached a point where it needs to make necessary adjustments to its route portfolio in order to improve the sustainability and financial performance in this very competitive environment."
