Global hospitality brand Accor has unveiled its 2026 Digital Pause Index, ranking Europe’s best cities to unplug and embrace slower travel. The index moves beyond traditional tourism data to measure the “Analog Quality” of 50 destinations using factors including museums and bookshops per 100,000 people, green space density, May temperatures, and the cost of a two-night stay in a four-star boutique hotel.
The findings highlight a growing shift away from packed itineraries and social media checklists, with travellers increasingly prioritising calm, connection, and meaningful experiences.
Among the key trends identified, destinations within two hours of London, including Ghent and Bordeaux, were found to offer the best sensory reset for short breaks. Smaller cities also outperformed major capitals in terms of balance and tranquillity, while cycling-focused destinations such as Amsterdam and Strasbourg encourage visitors to stay present and connected to their surroundings.
Leading the rankings is Zurich, praised for its accessibility, nature, and “blue space” culture, including floating along the Limmat River. Ljubljana follows in second place with its car-free centre and peaceful green spaces, while Vienna ranked third thanks to its café culture and park-filled landscape.
Edinburgh secured fourth place for its literary heritage and atmospheric streets, while Ghent completed the top five with its low-noise medieval charm, weaving workshops, and candle-lit jazz bars.
