The company worked with The South Pole Climate Neutral Company, an emission reductions project developer, to achieve the milestone, said to be the latest step in Aurora’s “ongoing commitment to help protect and preserve the planet”.
“For more than 30 years, Aurora Expeditions has been deeply committed to responsible and respectful travel,” said Monique Ponfoort, chief executive of Aurora. “We are always seeking ways to innovate, educate and create a positive impact for our planet, and we will continue our active sustained efforts to help preserve the beauty and majesty that Mother Nature possesses.”
Aurora achieved the South Pole Climate Neutral Company certification via a combination of sustainability initiatives across its operations.
It compensates for emissions with carbon credits purchased within climate action projects, which include InfraVest Tongyuan Wind Farm, a renewable energy project in north-west Taiwan, and biodiversity project Mount Sandy Conservation on South Australia’s Limestone Coast.
“We plan to accelerate meaningful changes in our active care programmes that will make a lasting difference for our people, our expeditions and importantly the future of our planet,” Ponfoort added.
Aurora Expeditions is also poised to welcome world-renowned marine conservationist Dr Sylvia Earle onboard as a special guest on an expedition to Baja California and Sea of Cortez, 4-12 May 2022 in the ship named in her honour.
