Crystal Cruises is to stop using plastic straws across its entire fleet.
As of 8 June, paper alternatives will be available in dining venues onboard Crystal Symphony and Crystal Serenity, as well as on its yacht, Crystal Esprit, and Crystal River Cruises vessels.
“New ships will never carry plastic straws,” the line announced at its 28th annual Sales Gala this week ahead of World Oceans Day (also on 8 June), which aims to increase awareness of the need to preserve the seas.
The initiative is the latest part of the line’s Crystal Cares sustainability programme, which focuses on developing energy efficiency, water conservation protocols and dedicated recycling programmes.
Crystal has also used a water filtration system for six years in all its dining venues, reducing plastic bottle usage.
The line recently announced a partnership with conservation charity Orca, bringing conservationists onboard selected Alaska voyages for training, research and data collection.
