Commercial flights from the US to Cuba will resume after more than 50 years in the autumn following approval from the US Department of Transport (DoT).
A total of six airlines including American Airlines, JetBlue and Southwest Airlines have been given permission to operate services.
The routes will operate from five US airports, including Miami, fort Lauderdale and Chicago, to nine Cuban cities excluding Havana which is still under consideration with the DoT.
Once launched the new flights could be the first of many, US carriers have requested nearly 60 flights a day to Havana alone, hence the delayed decision process with an answer expected in the summer.
The new flights come following a thawing in relationships between the two countries.
