Flights were suspended for about two hours at Gatwick airport on Wednesday afternoon (10 July) due to an issue with the airport’s air traffic control systems.
In total, 28 flights were cancelled and 26 diverted to other airports after the issue arose at about 5pm, the BBC reports. The problem was traced to the airport’s control tower.
Passengers were advised to check the status of their flight before heading to the airport, and to expect delays, disruption and cancellations at short notice.
Flights resumed at about 7pm, which Gatwick said followed an earlier issue with systems operated by ANS [Air Navigation Solutions] in its control tower.
“As we move back into full operations, we are likely to see some delays and further cancellations,” said the airport in a statement. “We apologise to passengers who have been affected.”
Gatwick said it intended to operate a full flight schedule on Thursday (11 July).
As of 8am on Thursday, the majority of flights due to depart Gatwick did so without further cancellations, albeit with many running behind schedule.
