With just nine months to go until Brexit, the Department for Transport has now started recruiting for a head of aviation to lead the EU exit negotiations. But is it too late?
Last year Ryanair’s Michael O’Leary predicted that flights could be grounded after March 29 2019 if there is no UK-EU Brexit deal.
Transport secretary Chris Grayling once rubbished such a notion as “inconceivable”. But with the DfT only now starting its recruitment to “lead on the overall negotiating position on aviation”, and reports suggesting the European Commission will not allow the CAA and the European Aviation Safety Agency to negotiate a “backstop” contingency plan for aviation if Brexit talks fail, could the unthinkable actually become reality?
