Turkey and Egypt are returning to popularity for UK holidaymakers, according to the boss of the group’s boss.
Tui chief executive Fritz Joussen said that “both destinations are back” as the company released its first quarter financial results.
“We see a return to Africa – in winter we see a return to Egypt quite significantly,” he said. “We also see a return to Turkey where we are still in the volume-building phase.”
Joussen admitted that Tui “took a risk” by staying in the Turkey market when demand dropped in recent years but this was now “paying out” as bookings were “now very strong”.
“I think there are some additional destinations as well, such as Croatia, which is very strong, and Bulgaria is quite strong. We can see a little remix particularly from UK customers,” he added.
When asked about Tui resuming holidays to Tunisia after a three-year gap following the Sousse massacre, which saw 30 of its UK customers killed, Joussen said: “We have opened the destination because demand was very clear.”
