The line is also implementing other waste-saving initiatives for its operations on Balmoral, Braemar, Boudicca and Black Watch.
They include the removal of single-use coffee cups from its Bookmark Cafés, replacing plastic condiment tubs in restaurants, buffets, and room service orders and swapping plastic laundry bags with linen ones.
Fred Olsen will also reduce the amount of cling film it uses and has chosen to use ropes to secure items during rough seas instead of plastic bindings.
The line added that in addition, it was considering measures that could be implemented to reduce and limit single-use plastics onboard its river ship, Brabant.
The move follows a recent pledge from Hurtigruten to become the world’s first plastic-free cruise company, after it revealed plans to ditch all “unnecessary” single-use plastic by July 2.
Both Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd and Carnival UK have also announced similar ambitions over the past months.
Thomas Rennesland, Fred Olsen’s hotel operations director, said: “We have been listening to guest feedback and asking our staff how we can work together to reduce, and wherever possible, remove our reliance upon single-use plastics.
“Onboard Boudicca for instance, we have been able to reduce the use of cling film by 32%. This is being replicated across our other ships.”
