In fact, so remote are some of the locations featured in Intrepid’s new 22-day itinerary, created to mark its 30th anniversary, they can’t even be found on Google Maps.
The adventure tour operator is looking for 10 hardy souls to sign up for the expedition, which departs June 30, 2019.
But once they assemble in Astana in Kazakhstan, little else will be revealed before, or even during, the three-week journey winding up in Ulaanbaatar in Mongolia.
Travellers will be given “small hints” about what is in store, with the only certainty being they will definitely see plenty of central Asia’s little-known sights.
Darrell Wade, Intrepid co-founder, explained the “mystery” trip was likely suited only to the most courageous travellers: “You won’t know where you’re going, what you’ll see, where you’ll stay or what you’ll be eating,” he said.
“There will be long travel days, intermittent electricity and Wi-Fi, a few cold showers, and a few treats along the way though - including fermented mare milk.
“But it’s going to be a real adventure. One day you could be hiking the world’s most remote and breathtaking landscapes; the next, soothing your aching muscles in a sauna in the middle of nowhere.”
The route is completely untrodden by Intrepid to date and celebrates the adventure travel company’s 30 years of operations in 2019.
The trip will be led by one of Intrepid’s most experienced local leaders, and has been secretly planned with the guidance and expert knowledge of its on-the-ground destination managers.
