Gambia is working to revive visitor numbers following the collapse of Thomas Cook, which reportedly accounted for 45% of all the country’s tourists.
The destination will show off two new beach hotels and detail improvement work at the country’s airport during WTM London this week.
Cook had invested in a new property, Tamala Beach, which was originally branded a Cook SunPrime property.
The hotel is now open at Kotu, with a first phase of 140 rooms. A second new property, The African Princess Hotel, was built by local destination management company Gambia Tours, which already owns the country’s largest hotel, The Senegambia.
Located in South Kotu, The African Princess has 140 rooms – some swim-up – plus a villa, and is sold in the UK by The Gambia Experience.
The operator has taken up some of the lost Cook capacity, including a new Birmingham-Banjul flight from 18 December 2019 to 22 April 2020.
Gambia has also embarked on a $14 million renovation of Banjul airport.
The project includes a major expansion and overhaul of the terminal, including the addition of more passenger facilities.
