Thailand is planning to promote the country’s lesser-known regions to avoid the pitfalls of overtourism and relieve pressure on Bangkok and the most popular beach resorts.
Last year, the country attracted a record-breaking 35 million travellers and expects that to rise by another million in 2018.
With figures reaching such heights, new tourism minister Weerasak Kowsurat is on a mission to spread visitors more widely, backed by a string of planned transport improvements to make it easier for travellers to reach outlying areas.
“We want to ensure that we protect and preserve our tourism products for future generations,” he explained.
