Walt Disney World Resort and Universal Studios were among those forced to shut their doors

Walt Disney World Resort in Orlando closed a number of its parks including the Magic Kingdom Park, Animal Kingdom Hollywood Studios, Epcot and its two water parks Blizzard Beach and Typhoon Lagoon.

The closure marks only the fifth time in history that the resort has officially closed since Walt Disney World first opened almost 45 years ago.

“Resort hotels will remain open,” the theme park said on its website. “We hope to resume normal operations on Tuesday, September 12. We will provide regular updates to our guests on all operational changes.”

Other Florida theme parks also announced their closure for Sunday (September 10) and today (September 11) including Universal Studios, Legoland Florida, SeaWorld and Busch Gardens Tampa Bay.

Elsewhere in the city, Orlando International airport remains closed but is due to reopen on Tuesday (September 12).

In a travel update on its website, Thomas Cook said it was “reviewing our flying programme” to Florida and would advise customers on repatriation plans once Orlando airport was operating again.

British Airways cancelled Monday’s flights to Miami, Tampa, Fort Lauderdale and Orlando.

BA is also providing rebook options for passengers booked to fly to and from Atlanta until September 12.
