Work starts on Rosewood’s new London hotel

Developers have broken ground on the project to convert the former US Embassy in central London into a Rosewood hotel.

New Rosewood hotel in London will open in 2023

US officials moved out of the building in Grosvenor Square in Mayfair to a new location in Nine Elms earlier this year – much to the scorn of US President Donald Trump who refused to attend the opening of the new embassy.

The site, 30 Grosvenor Square, will be turned into Rosewood’s second property in London. The hotel, retail and event space will feature 137 rooms, five restaurants, six shops, spa and a ballroom that can take up to 1,000 guests.

The redevelopment of the Grade II-listed building by Qatari Diar Europe is a £1-billion project, with the Rosewood hotel due to open in 2023 and all designs by British architect Sir David Chipperfield.

Radha Arora, president of Rosewood Hotels & Resorts, said: “By reimagining the site of the former US Embassy, we hope to provide a coveted experience within the prestigious neighbourhood of Mayfair that truly embodies Rosewood’s Sense of Place philosophy.

“We are excited to open up this historic part of Grosvenor Square once again, for guests and the public to enjoy, creating a welcoming environment that reflects both the historic nature of the building yet also bringing a fresh sensibility to this significant area.”

Rosewood already operates a hotel in High Holborn, London, close to Covent Garden, which it opened in 2013.
