The cruise company was the first line to purchase a private island when it acquired Great Stirrup Cay in 1977, and the island has already undergone a series of upgrades during the last 39 years.
Norwegian is planning to add a range of new facilities on the 250-acre island, as part of its Norwegian Edge programme of enhancements.
These include a new half-mile boardwalk, featuring shaded areas, along the island’s 10-acre beach, as well as spending $1 million on landscaping.
There will also be a new entertainment and activity complex next to the beach featuring a stage for live music, games and entertainment, plus basketball and volleyball courts, table tennis and a picnic area.
For more adventurous activities, Norwegian is adding a new zip line course featuring two parallel lines.
All restaurants and bars are also being refreshed including a new taco bar, Abaco Taco, and LandShark Bar & Grill, while seating will be increased at existing dining venues including the buffet.
The work on the island is due to be completed by January 2017.
From summer 2017, Norwegian will also offer a new lagoon retreat on the island featuring a Mandara Spa, restaurant, family area and 22 private villas.
