The four Australians had been travelling together, and were on the missing flight when it disappeared while en route from Kuala Lumpur in March 2014, with 239 passengers onboard.
The families are seeking $200,000 in compensation for “suffering varying degrees of nervous shock and consequential economic loss”, the Canberra Times reported.
They are also understood to want the Federal Court of Australia to reimburse them for the funeral costs and for administering the estates, the Daily Mail said.
The families believe Malaysia Airlines “failed to take any or any adequate precautions for the safety of the passengers”.
They are also claiming that the airline “failed to prevent the flight from being operated in a manner that caused it to crash”.
The status of the case will be updated on August 17.
