Menorca is focusing on sports tourism in a bid to grow visitor numbers during its shoulder season.
Speaking at a breakfast briefing, the island’s tourism minister Maite Salord said sports tourists typically travel outside of the peak periods and account for 25% of tourism worldwide, according to WTTC figures.
She added: "As a result of this sports tourism is frequently known for quality and sustainability."
Menorca Sportive Association spokesman Joan Febrer added the island will also benefit from the growing number of sports tourists coming to Menorca.
He said in 2017 10.6 million people, an increase of 5.9% on 2016, travelled to Spain for sports tourism, spending more than €12.8 million euros, marking an 8.9% year-on-year increase in tourism expenditure.
Febrer added the sector is typically more financially worthwhile, with sports tourists spending an average of 20% more than a typical tourist.
Cycling Friendly chief executive Matias Ximelis said there are more than 400 public and private sports facilities on Menorca to tempt each year’s 1.5 million visitors into activity.
He added once on the island they can slumber in style, with 60% of its 54,000 registered hotel beds being four star rated or better.
